Mythologies
Sonata for Trumpet and Piano
Marcus Grant and Matthew Vangjel (University of Missouri - Kansas City) co-lead the consortium for a new work for trumpet and piano by Gala Flagello entitled Mythologies. This 10- to 12-minute piece will be structured as a three-movement sonata geared toward professional and pre-professional players. Mythologies will explore the idea of archetypes, expectations, and the experiences that make us who we are. Each movement will be inspired by a different Greek god or goddess—likely Hermes, Apollo, and Artemis—utilizing epithets ascribed to them: Messenger, Archer, and Huntress. Mythologies will both showcase the trumpet's virtuosity and highlight its lyrical beauty through the movements' distinct tempi and textures. The trumpet and piano will fly, chase, reflect, dream, and discover in this exciting new addition to the repertoire.
